Grilling season is, of course, also cleaning season . However, there are grilling pros who have never let their SKOTTI gas grill come into contact with water. They appreciate the patina that the SKOTTI develops over its lifetime, making it their very own SKOTTI.
To ensure a clean and hygienic grill, these experts use a special cleaning process that the SKOTTI already has. The magic word is pyrolysis – a cleaning process that's also familiar from your home oven.
During pyrolysis (pyro = fire/heat, lyse = solution), your gas grill is literally "burned out." This means that it is heated to a high temperature and deliberately brought to a glowing smoldering point. At high temperatures of at least 385 degrees Celsius, any contaminants such as food scraps or grease splashes on the grill will burn off after about five minutes. Organic compounds are dissolved by the burnout process and can be easily removed with a sponge or grill brush after cooling to a lower temperature.
And even if you choose another cleaning method we have listed, we recommend that you “pyrolyze” your SKOTTI at least once a month .
But now, as promised – six hot tips to keep your SKOTTI gas grill in good condition and bring it to a real shine!
1. Clean the gas grill in the dishwasher
Most users probably clean their gas grill grates by pre-soaking them in dishwater with dish soap and then scrubbing them with a steel sponge . Then simply toss them in the dishwasher – SKOTTI is made of such high-quality stainless steel that absolutely nothing will rust. By the way: As if that weren't enough of an achievement, our SKOTTI won the 2019 Red Dot Award for outstanding design.
2. Insider tip: Baking soda as a grill cleaner
With SKOTTI, you always have a multifunctional kitchen in your luggage. With the right accessories, you can cook, grill, roast, smoke, or bake – SKOTTI will get family, friends, and partners excited for a fresh meal in no time. Do you like baking? With the SKOTTI-CAP, your SKOTTI grill transforms into an oven with a lid, anytime and anywhere.

Speaking of “baking” – your mother already knew that:
Baking powder not only produces delicious results, but also really clean ones : Sprinkle baking powder over the dirty, moistened grate, work it in lightly and let it work, then scrub it off with a steel sponge and put it in the dishwasher.
Of course, you can also use the baking soda for environmentally friendly cleaning outdoors – but only if the hoses at your home are long enough. ;-)

Alternative: If you're more of a salty person, try mixing 50g of baking soda with half a liter of water in a spray bottle and spraying the grill while it's still warm. Then let it sit for an hour or longer and remove any loosened dirt and residue with a steel sponge.
3. Apple cider vinegar and sugar as a cleaner for the gas grill
If there's one thing you always have on hand, it's sugar . Mixed with a little vinegar, you get the perfect mixture to solve the problem of food residue, crusts, and grease. Although sugar doesn't exactly melt body fat, you can combine two tablespoons of sugar with about 200 ml of apple cider vinegar to remove the last traces of grease from your SKOTTIS. Make sure the metal is still hot when you apply the mixture to the dirty areas. After about an hour, simply remove the remaining residue with water and a sponge, and voilà—the grill grate is clean!
4. Coffee makes us feel like we are connected by a ring!
Coffee gives you a boost. And your SKOTTI gas grill a shine. Since you can grill with SKOTTI around the clock, cleaning should be a breeze. For example, during your coffee break, take the coffee grounds in your hands (note: wear rubber gloves) and massage them into the grate bars with a sponge. After soaking the grill grate in water for a few minutes, scrub it beneath the water's surface. The coffee grounds act like sandpaper , replacing the risky use of harsh abrasives, which often contain harmful surfactants.
5. For the really tough: onions!

Are you someone who likes to push their limits and seeks adventure? Then the SKOTTI is your reliable partner, anytime, anywhere. And this cleaning method might be just right for you: Simply attach a raw, split onion to a fork! This way, you can rub the skewered bulb over the bars while the grill is still glowing. Sure, that might be quite onion-inducing. But when everything's clean, the only thing you'll be able to do is shed a few tears of joy!
6. Home remedies vs. chemicals for cleaning the grill
At SKOTTI, we've always focused on sustainability and harmony with nature. That's why we always prefer household products to chemical cleaning agents. In terms of health, simple remedies from grandma's household have the edge, as they gently clean your robust and steel-hard cast iron for a lifetime. Rule of thumb: If you don't just want to live to a ripe old age but want a faithful companion by your side until the end, never mix chemical cleaners, as they create a highly hazardous mixture of caustic substances and can irritate your respiratory system!
In our opinion, you can easily use some good grill cleaners like Ballistol or Prowin Oven Cleaner, as well as Maxxi Clean. You can also use them to clean our large SKOTTI MAX!
The complete grill package: Clean grill accessories anytime, anywhere
Since SKOTTI can also grill with wood and charcoal, you have a wide range of options for your charcoal. Just grill anywhere. For example, on the beach as a charcoal grill: Protect your juicy steak and grilled food from sand, dust, and wind with our SKOTTI Cap .
If things aren't so stormy, you can also clean the CAP effectively at any time with our cleaning tips. To prevent dirt from accumulating and burning in after grilling, let it cool for about 20 minutes , give it a quick wipe with a damp cloth, and pack it in the included truck tarpaulin bag.
